Land of Bad

It's a little formulaic, OK is very formulaic, but the strength of the actors elevates is beyond it's station.
Currently it's sat at 6.5 on IMDB, to be honest it's not too far off the mark, though 7.2 or even 7.5 would be much better.

You've got Russel Crowe, Liam Hemsworth, Luke Hemsworth and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli) amongst others.
The dialogue is actually pretty good, there's not the usual gung ho, balls to the wall, America is best bullshit, all the things that need to happen, happen. All the things that need to be said and no more. It's actually quite tight dialogue. Like I said, this along with the acting really elevates it above the formula.
Excellent film!

The Abyss (1989)
I cannot believe this film is so old. I'm older! Finally it's arrived in 4K HDR and it looks stunning. I will say it's a fake 2.35:1 The scene with the "Russian water tentacle", when Michael Biehn closes the door and the tentacle collapses, you could see the very obvious CGI effect on the water. You can't in this version. It's cut off by the black borders.

Seeing as it's the only difference I've spotted, it's no big deal.
This is also the directors cut, just how James Cameron actually intended the film to be shown, along with the drowning rat that the BBFC didn't like... TWICE.
For a 35 year old film it does look really really nice though.

Going back to Leave The World Behind. Some trivia and discussion topics to mull over.

GH's neighbour's last name is Huxley, an homage to Aldous Huxley who wrote the 1932 Brave New World novel, amongst others, that painted pictures of dystopian futures where technology has become the thing that corrupts humanity and is used as a way to harm people.
The summary of the book Brave New World
Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media—has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller’s genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 AF (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.
Considering the book was written in 1932, 92 years ago, it's a little prophetic.

Amanda's laptop and the emergency kits that Danny buys at the store are made by E-Corp, now the name E-Corp might not surprise some people, it was featured HEAVILY in the Mr. Robot TV Show, also written by Sam Esmail (Sam Esmail directs this movie), who wrote this script for Leave The World Behind.

The oil tanker that crashes on the beach is called the White Lion, it was the first ship to land slaves in America in 1619. Also the radio in the car is set to AM 1619

One final and very interesting thing said in Leave the World Behind:
The daughter of the Sandfords (Farrah Mackenzie) played by Ethan Hawk and Julia Roberts, gives us a diatribe from God.
I'm paraphrasing but it goes like this:
A god fearing man believes god will save him from an impending flood, he gets a weather warning, sirens that it's starting. He sits on his roof as his area is flooded, a boat comes by and he turns down the help saying god will save me, along comes a helicopter, again he says god will save me, finally the flood is too great, washes his house away and the man drown.
He goes to heaven and asks god why he didn't save him, and god replies, "I sent you a weather warning, I sent you sirens warning it's here, I sent you a boat to rescue you and finally a helicopter." God then replies "How didn't I try and help you?"

For me this last part is the most important, the signs are there, but are you paying attention?

There's plenty more trivia to be had on IMDB.
